Paul A. Sieving

Paul A. Sieving, M.D., Ph.D., became director of the National Eye Institute in 2001. Previously, he was the Paul R. Lichter Professor of Ophthalmic Genetics at the University of Michigan Medical School and founding director of the Center for Retinal and Macular Degeneration in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. His use of pharmacological agents to slow degeneration in animal models led to the first human clinical trial of ciliary neurotrophic factor for retinitis pigmentosa.
