Thomas R. Insel

Thomas R. Insel, M.D., has served as director of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) since 2002. His research in social neuroscience has used clues from comparative neurobiology to identify the molecular mechanisms, cellular substrates and neural systems involved in social attachments, from parental care to pair bonding. Under Insel’s leadership during what he has called the Decade of Discovery, NIMH researchers have focused on applying insights from neuroscience and genetics research to transform our understanding and treatments of serious mental disorders.
