UCI Center for Learning Through the Arts

Funded in March, 2007: $60000 for 2 years
The Dana Foundation will fund a two-year professional development program for students who are pre-service teaching artists at University of California, Irvine, University of California, Los Angeles, and California State University, Long Beach. Instruction and mentoring will be provided by university faculty and experienced teaching artists.  Each campus will offer a full 30 hours of "for-credit" classroom instruction to the pre-service teaching artists on dance, drama, and visual art.  The goals are to prepare the students to effectively communicate with the young people they will encounter in diverse urban schools; and to provide them with a well-researched and effective curriculum which they can adapt to the classrooms situations they encounter in the field. Students who successfully complete the course will be offered apprenticeships with experienced teachers in schools located in Los Angeles, Long Beach and parts of Orange County.
