Los Angeles Philharmonic Association - 2007
Funded in March, 2007: $40000 for 1 years
Dana funds will be used by the Philharmonic for two professional development initiatives: The Music Education Laboratory and Music Teacher Instrumental Masterclasses. The Music Education Laboratory is a comprehensive and sequential year-long curriculum for teaching artists and Philharmonic musicians who work in LAPA education programs. The Laboratory develops the teaching skills of LAPA musicians, teaching artists, and school music specialists, with the primary goal of creating a cohesive faculty that works effectively in classrooms and the community. The program also builds teaching capacity by focusing on presentation skills, partnering with classroom and music teachers, designing and implementing standards-based lessons, engaging students, using teachers' instruments as teaching tools, coaching young musicians, facilitating critical looking and listening, and assessing student work. The Music Teacher Instrumental Masterclasses are clinics for beginning and intermediate youth orchestra music directors led by members of the Philharmonic. Objectives are to give participants transferable teaching skills they can easily use in the classroom and the opportunity to feel like artists.
