MSG and the adult brain

MSG is much more toxic than recognized. I have a patient who gets focal seizures related to MSG intake and who has been significantly helped by the glutamate blocking drug, mematine. (used to treat Alzheimer´s dementia) We should stop "hiding our heads in the sand" about the dangers of MSG in our diets and environment. How is it that a drug that helps block glutamate help individuals with Alzheimer´s and yet we continue to feed them more glutamate? --too much MONEY gained from MSG to get any fair evaluation of its toxicity.

MSG in my brain

He states that msg doesn't get in adult brains very well. I beg to differ. My sleep is interrupted although I'm not aware. I toss and turn. The next day I feel like I've been hit by a MAC truck. I'm in a fog until noon or later. I now recognize that I must try to remember what I ate the day before. Invariably I remember I ate out. I won't eat anything I think has msg, so it was added without my knowing it. May have an msg hangover into the next day.
Crawling

Interesting comment about crawling... My dd is currently going through 32 weeks of crawling... To help ADHD. A theory that dr. Mirium bender created, studied and explains decades ago. Seems to have been successful for many over the past 2 or 3 decades, particularly if a child didn't crawl very much as a baby. The crawling exercises however aren't recommended until age 5... And up, even into old age. There's so much about the foundation of all other development involved with thus. We bought the book "Stopping ADHD" used on amazon.... It's very interesting and seemed right on target with all of it's research and conclusions. Now I've gotta go freak out about this glutamate thing.... But we will continue our crawling exercises until done.
glutamate storm as it relates to epilepsy

I have a 21 year old daughter who has suffered from Epilepsy, Landau-Kleffner Syndrome, Bi-lateral Todd's Paralysis, Autism, and profound Intellectual Disabilities due to an Anoxic Brain Injury at the age of 18 months. Conventional drugs used to treat epilepsy have not only been ineffective, they have actually proven to exacerbate the severity of her seizures.
I have therefore taken a less "conventional" approach to treatment over the years.
I have been interested for some time in the idea of a Glutamate Storm perhaps being partly responsible for her seizures. Your phrase "...almost all brain cells use Glutamate to communicate..." presented me with an "Ah Ha" moment.
I can predict seizures with a fair level of accuracy because I have noticed that my daughter's cognitive level rises significantly just before seizures strike. Could an excess level of Glutamate be causing the increased cognitive levels and could her Glutamate levels be continuing to rise to the point of excess--triggering seizures?
I simply want to thank you for the article. I intend to pursue the idea of Glutamate Blockers in order to control my daughter's seizures.
I did note that this article is from 2007 and I was wondering if there have been any more recent developments with regard to this avenue of research.

I have a genetic defect in the methyl cycle which can interfere with the glutimate-gaba balance.http://www.heartfixer.com/AMRI-Outcomes-Non-CV-Autism-Methyl%20Cycle.htm. You can be tested at holisticheal.com or Dr. Jim Roberts in Toledo, OH. If you don't want to pay for testing just supplement as if you had the genetic deficiencies.

Many ABI patients are having excellent success with mega doses (5-15mg) of Vitamin B12 Methylcobalamin to counteract the effects that seem to be about glutamate flooding even years after the initial injury. Our small group of survivors is communicating about our success but have not managed to find any real research to support our findings. Does anyone know of any such research? Or is anyone willing to conduct any... regardless of the inexpensive nature of the B12 Methylcobalamin?

Glutamate and MSG are indeed the same thing, and the more you try to avoid them, the more you ingest. They are not only in food, they are in vaccines, medicines, laundry stain remover, and who knows what else. Glutamate overload is not only dangerous for young brains, but also aging brains (studies indicate it causes not only ADD and autism, but also Alzheimers). It is known to also cause ALS (Lou Gerhig's), Parkinson's, and all sorts of auto-immune disorders. I began studying it after seeing a link between migraines, atrial fibrillation and dementia in my own family. I googles those three seemingly unrelated disorders together and the common bond between them was glutamate. I then added in other disorders members of my family have had, and found links to glutamate overload in everything from detached retina to kidney disease, from OCD to Malabsorption.
We need a TINY amount of glutamate, which we easily get from any healthy diet. We're getting massive amounts - it's even sprayed on fruits and vegetables! Some families have a gene that makes us more vulnerable to the damage glutamates cause. I had micronutrient testing on myself and my children and learned that we are one. My dd and I read labels and do our best to avoid glutamate, and our levels were high. My son is in collge and lives on his own. He loves Japanese food and the concept of umami (a trendy Japanese way of eating that is really only adding extra MSG). his levels were sky high, and lately he's having a myriad of health issues that all point to MSG poisoning.
Google glutamate, and read everything you can. Read the prominant sites run by the food industry, and compare them to the sites run by health concerns. Most of all, read the studies that can be found on sites run by the NIH, etc. Educate yourself on the difference between natural glutamate and synthesized, and on the plethora of names the food and additive industry use to hide glutamate in the food you eat. For starters, never eat a food with 'natural flavoring' or 'spices' in the ingredient list. If a company uses a legitimate flavoring, say chocolate or strawberry, they proudly proclaim that fact. The same is true of spices. Avoid anything hydrolyzed, and be very suspicious of things like soup stock which have bold labels stating "NO MSG!" but say "natural flavoring" in tiny print. The more I read, the more products, like stain lifters, I find this poison in. Now, consider that all our modern ailments, from autism to fibromyalgia, etc etc etc began to show up shortly after glutamates were introduced to the US. Coincidence? Not likely.

When I ingest any MSG, I get extremely tired, very thirsty, withdraw and can't function unless I sleep for several hours. Is this from excess glutamate in my brain and can I do something to counteract this awful reaction?

Regarding the final statement of this paper, I have a shocking question ["* The glutamate in MSG (monsodium glutamate), used in some foods, is related to brain glutamate but does not appear to get into the brains of adults very well. It can get into the brains of infants and be toxic to brain cells, however, which is why the FDA has not approved it for use in baby food."]
The issue is expecting women--is MSG approved for consumption by pregnant women where it could possibly cause brain damage to the developing baby? Why is MSG included in some childhood vaccines? Why have they put (at least in the past) MSG in some baby foods? Changing the subject somewhat--why are we being smothered with MSG in virtually all prepared foods? Yesterday, I had a traditional Thanksgiving dinner and marveled how wonderful food tastes without this stuff.

To Nancy Young: Here's something absolutely free that might -- operative word MIGHT -- help, although after 20 years, who knows? Anyway, many years ago some people found that crawling on hands & knees seems to dramatically stimulate recovery in stroke or other brain trauma patients. The hypothesis it that this activates some unknown neurophysiological development process that normally is only triggered in infancy, normally only needed then, that unexpectedly lies more or less dormant into adulthood. You could try this in private, and if someone did happen to catch you doing it, you could always be "looking for something" if you choose not to explain. Anyway, it can't possibly hurt to try. It would be very interesting if this does help you.

The footnote "* The glutamate in MSG (monosodium glutamate), used in some foods, is related to brain glutamate but does not appear to get into the brains of adults very well. It can get into the brains of infants and be toxic to brain cells, however, which is why the FDA has not approved it for use in baby food." is nonsense! Free glutamic acid is free glutamic acid, period – how do the authors suppose the ‘glutamate’ normally present in the brain got there in the first place?
Glutamate is any salt of glutamic acid. When sodium glutamate, dissolves in water it dissociates into its ionic components sodium and glutamic acid. Glutamate as used here means free glutamic acid, a nonessential proteinogenic amino acid, when ionized in solution. Any difference between susceptibility of infants and adults – adolescents are not mentioned here – would obviously be due to the immaturity of some as-yet undetermined regulatory or other protective mechanism. Adolescent reaction to glutamate manifests as negative behavioral disturbances ranging from adverse excitability to full-blown ADHD. Adults just get headaches.

I would really like to contact anyone who could help me with my ongoing problem, as I had a stroke and head injury approximately 20 years prior to today's date. I have a family of my own now, but find it rather difficult to deal with day to day situations from time to time.
