For the past 35 years I have been on a program of fasting every spring. Starting at 3 days it was increased every year by one to three days. By 2006, at 40 days of fasting, I was able to break a world record in push ups. This was at the age of 54 years old. I have noticed that during the fast, I have less joint pain, more flexibility and more strength. In 2006 after 40 days of fasting, my cholesterol went from 235 to 160 and the LDL went from 167 to 97. My doctor was amazed and impressed. It has been my experience that fasting benefits in many ways in the physical, mental and spiritual areas of well-being.

Members of the Church of Jesuus Christ of Latter Day Saints fast regularly for 24 hours (no food or water) on the first Sunday of every month. (The money for the meals missed is donated to a fasting fund) As a member who has done this for over 28 years, I can certainly testify that fasting does clear and sharpen the mind and refresh the body. But because this fasting is done with a spiritual intention, not merely a physical one, it also brings a deeper sense of humility, compassion and understanding for those who are without food. This in turn deepens our appreciation and gratitude for the food we are fortunate enough to eat. Such emotional factors also play an important part in mental, emotional and physical wellbeing.
