Obama Education Secretary Affirms Arts as 'Core Academic Subject'

 I am an elementary music teacher in the 2nd largest school district in the U.S., LAUSD. Cortines and the board are cutting elementary arts in half next year and the full program the next year. How can we be doing this to our children? How can we take away this creative, core subject, multi-cultural, historical aspect of their lives? I can't imagine growing up without music. Music gave me everything, creative outlet, a chance to thrive, a chance to create, be confident, and be social. Beyond that it taught me great discipline. Katherine
