NYC “BRAIN BEE” DRAWS STUDENTS FROM 27 HIGH SCHOOLS

Competition Set for Wednesday, February 7, 4:30 pm at the New York Academy of Sciences

WHAT:

Students from 27 New York City high schools will participate in the 2007 New York City Regional Brain Bee Competition, judged by Joseph E. LeDoux, Ph.D., Henry and Lucy Moses Professor of Science at the Center for Neural Science of New York University, and guitarist in the New York-based, all-scientist band, The Amygdaloids.

The top three winners will receive cash prizes, neuroscience books, a one-year membership to the New York Academy of Sciences, and other awards.  During Brain Awareness Week (March 12-18), the first place winner will receive an all-expenses paid trip to compete against other regional finalists in the International Brain Bee, March 16-17, 2007 at the University of Maryland in Baltimore.

The Brain Bee is a Q & A competition that tests high school students' knowledge of neuroscience.  Students, selected by their high schools to compete, are quizzed on the brain and how it relates to memory, emotions, intelligence, sensations, movement, stress, aging, sleep, and disorders.  Brain Bees are currently held in 17 U.S. states, and in 4 other countries (Australia, Canada, Egypt, and India).
