WHAT IS THE BRAIN BEE?
In celebration of Brain Awareness Week, the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives coordinates the NYC Regional Brain Bee, a live written competition that tests the neuroscience knowledge of high school students. Every year, regional Brain Bees are held worldwide as part of the International Brain Bee. Winners of regional Bees in the U.S. are eligible to compete in the National Brain Bee at the University of Maryland during Brain Awareness Week. The U.S. National Champion is eligible to compete against other national champions in the International Brain Bee.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
The competition is open to students in grades 9-12 from public and private schools throughout New York City and Westchester County. Each school can send two competitors. Students must be registered in advance.

THE PRIZES:
CASH PRIZES: $500 First Place; $300 Second Place, $200 Third Place
First place winner receives an all-expenses paid trip for two to compete in the National Brain Bee.

Some sample questions are listed on the  International Brain Bee site.

NYC BRAIN BEE STUDY SESSION
A two-part study session, organized by Columbia University graduate and undergraduate students, will be held on January 5 and 26, 2013 to help registered students prepare for the NYC Brain Bee.  The study session will include presentations and activities based on the Brain Facts and Neuroscience: Science of the Brain books, lab tours, a career panel, neuroethics discussions, and a practice Brain Bee.  To register for the study session, please email us at BrainBee@dana.org by Friday, December 21, 2012.  Only registered competitors may participate in the study session.
