Center for Arts Education - 2008
Funded in March, 2008: $25000 for 1 years
Since 2002, The Center for Arts Education has partnered with PS 37R, a special education school serving severely disabled students in Staten Island, to facilitate arts education partnerships and offer professional development opportunities for their artists and teachers. PS 37R has reported great overall improvement with students participating in various arts programs and approached CAE to assist and support them in creating an Arts Academy.CAE received funding from The Dana Foundation to support a training program for teaching artists working in the Arts Academy. In partnership with arts education provider Marquis Studios, CAE will create and implement an interactive, on-site professional development program to equip teaching artists in the performing arts to work with students with disabilities, especially autism. Through observation, seminars, and classroom experience, the program aims to ensure that artists are trained to work effectively with students with multiple disabilities. It will also result in materials which can disseminate and replicate best practices for teaching artists working with disabled students.
