Maui Academy of Performing Arts

Funded in January, 2009: $25000 for 1 years
Maui Academy of Performing Arts (MAPA) offers educational performing arts programs across the state of Hawaii.  MAPA’s Teaching Artist Training Program provides high-caliber, in-depth training to prepare professional teaching artists to teach performing arts residencies in Maui schools. The program includes three components: professional development workshops, internships and ongoing evaluations. MAPA developed the Teaching Artist Training Program in the mid-1990s to train professional teaching artists. The program grew significantly in scope and size in 2006 in response to schools’ increased demand for standards-based arts residencies that are integrated into the school’s curriculum. Implementation of the expanded program began in 2006 and 2007.The Dana-funded training will consist of 36 hours of professional development workshops, an 8 week residency in an elementary school and qualitative and quantitative evaluations to assess the efficacy of the program.  Information gleaned from the process will allow MAPA to fine-tune the program with the goal of exporting it to other communities.
